Turkey Market Summary 2010
Every year as a part of our planning process for the future we start by taking a look at what happened in Turkey in the past year as this forms the foundation for the future. Given the volatility of the market recently we thought it might be useful to share this summary with you. The summary will come in 4 parts, beginning with today’s summary – an overview of the Turkish economic situation. It will be followed over the next three days with a summary of (a) the cotton situation, (b) the textile situation (yarns and fabrics); and finally (c) the garment situation.
Indian Yarn Exports Suspended
Once again the Government of India has intervened in the textile industry by limiting cotton yarn exports, in the hopes of making more yarns available for local fabric manufacturers to help keep cotton yarn affordable.
Cotton Market Prices & US Export Sales
The report below from Bloomberg on 21 September gives a good overview of recent market movements. As you read market reports it is important to keep in mind that this year the US is estimated to produce 18.84 million bales of cotton this season, and export 15.5 million bales. As of 10 September – only 6 weeks into the new marketing year, the US has already sold 7.03 million bales, of which 1.065 has been shipped), which represents 45.4% of total estimated sales for the full year. Biggest buyers were China: 1.729 m. bales; Mexico: 0.988 m. bales; Turkey: 0.638 m. bales. In addition 233,000 bales for the 2011/2012 season have been contracted. All factors point to the importance of watching the market closely this year.
